Mardi McDaniel, Community/University
Partnerships, was presented the 2008 HOPE Award given by the
American Cancer Society, Santa Rosa Unit, in recognition of
exceptional service in the areas of cancer prevention, such as
diet, nutrition and lifestyles; control (education and
research); and patient support. The award is based on the
volunteer’s accomplishments, dedication and length of service.
The award was presented at the annual dinner.
Ray Uzwyshyn, Digital and Learning
Technologies, University Libraries, was invited to author the
project briefing feature for the September/October 2008 issue
of D-Lib. The
feature was based on a project done in late 2007 for
the university’s 40th Anniversary where UWF Digital and
Learning Technologies developed a digital
image archive for the library Special
Collections and Archives. The image archive has
attracted wider attention during the past year for its innovative use of technology and economical open source
methodologies and is currently being referred to
as The University of West Florida Libraries Model. In
the D-Lib project briefing, Repurposing
Open Source Software for Agile Digital Image Library
Development: The University of West Florida Libraries
Model, Uzwyshyn was asked to outline the project’s use of
new open source possibilities for digital library development.
D-Lib Online is a joint NSF, DARPA, CNRI National
Research Initiative, focusing on leading edge digital
library R&D and is available in English and in translation
at multiple mirror sites around the world.
