In an era where our AI infused digital landscapes increasingly define the contours of political discourse and public truth, AI's mischievous upstart Perplexity’s recent release of an uncensored remix of DeepSeek’s R1 model marks a watershed moment. This new version of DeepSeek R1, an important recent AI LLM—redubbed R1 1776—purports to strip away the ideological filters that once muted Chinese discussion of subjects as contentious as the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre and Taiwan’s political status and semiconductor geopolitical connections, ushering in a new chapter for open information in the age of artificial intelligence, transparency and scaling datasets.

At its heart, DeepSeek’s original R1 model was a marvel of computational and technological innovation and ingenuity—a language model built at a fraction of the cost typically associated with American giants like OpenAI, Google and Anthropic. Reasoning levels at the highest Ph.D./Nobel Laureate STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) levels yet, its achievements came at a price: an entrenched 'large nation' state specific censorship mechanism that reflected the background Chinese Communist Party’s imperatives. In its default state, R1 would deftly sidestep inquiries into politically sensitive topics, offering sterile, government-approved narratives. For instance, ask it about the events in Tiananmen Square or the sovereignty of Taiwan, and the model would either retreat with a vague apology or pivot abruptly to neutral subjects such as higher level mathematics or physics.

Perplexity’s intervention, as meticulously detailed in their blog post “Open-sourcing R1 1776

By re-engineering the post-training process, Perplexity has recalibrated the model’s response algorithm to allow for direct engagement with the full spectrum of historical and geopolitical inquiry. The implications of both of these moves globally, one from Western 'woke' political perspetives, the other from Eastern similarly ideological historical necessities, albeit more current stretch far beyond technical minutiae—they strike at the very heart of what it means to have access to unmediated information in our interconnected world or mediated information that verges on the Orwellian 1984 version from Orwell's famous novel, dependent on which side you ask.

Hegemony and Constructed Horizons of Truth

To note, the remix also offers an opportunity to access a fuller, more interdisciplinary array of responses—responses that might, in turn, foster a richer dialogue across the boundaries of history, politics, and science to more fully examine the deep complexity, contradictions, paradoxes and synthesis possible.

Such openness is essential in a world where hegemonic forces—be they geopolitical or corporate—wield information as a means of power and control, especially the nation state or wider well funded political movements whether good or bad and their corporate alliances whether good or bad. We have seen these alliances before in history, especially the 20th century. By allowing an AI to grapple with controversial topics directly, Perplexity is advocating for a model of knowledge production that is not confined by the narrow corridors of state-sanctioned narratives or at least trying to start a conversation and from a more self-serving angle, generate attention and also interest for it's own produce, especially now that DeepSeekR1 - the original Chinese mix may be banned governmentally. It is a reminder that the true value of an AI lies not merely in its ability to compute answers, but in its capacity to engage with the complex, often messy realities of human society in the 21st century - both these great challenges and great possibilities.

The Geopolitics of Silicon and Sovereignty

At the same time, the story of DeepSeek’s remix cannot be told in isolation from the broader geopolitical stakes that underlie the global technology race. With the Perprlexity 1776 remix now offering a more balanced, open or US perspective, depending on your angle or side of the board above, there is an implicit challenge to the prevailing order: Can a truly open model help democratize access to information globally, or will it further entrench the competitive dynamics of nation states, here in this example particularly, the U.S.–China tech rivalry? While the ability to discuss virtually any topic is a triumph for academic freedom and democratic discourse in the social sciences and humanities , it also raises challenging questions for the STEM disciplines, particularly those in high end disciplines related to Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The small coterie of scientists at labs like Los Alamos where their expertise globally could be counted on the digits of two hands cannot be happy. Certain domains—such as the design of biological weapons or the development of nuclear arsenals— do warrant stringent controls, not out of an aversion to knowledge, but as a safeguard against existential risks and ambitious but morally compromised scientists in other globally vicinities using the affordances of the currently top released models not for the good of humanity but rather for other purposes. Safety, or questions of 'alignment' as the discipline is termed in artificial intelligence circles is becoming paramount.
