The University of Miami Libraries - a vibrant learning resource that will touch every student, faculty member, and researcher across the entire University – is being designed to integrate hi-tech instruction, encourage independent thinking, and promote scholarship.
As the intellectual hub of the University, the new Library Center on the Coral Gables campus will give UM students cutting edge opportunities for research and learning.
The design of a 100,000 square foot expansion to the main library is underway. The $40M five story facility will be built facing Memorial Drive, adjacent to the Otto G. Richter Library. Much needed state-of-the-art collaborative learning spaces for student and faculty interaction will be included. The new facility will also include group study rooms to accommodate the preferred learning style of today’s students, a grand reading room for contemplative, independent study, a hi-tech information center to facilitate scholarly communication, cutting edge instructional labs, a spacious new home for our Special Collections, and work space specifically designed to meet the preferences of our graduate students and faculty. The addition will provide access to the latest technology, places for experimentation, and opportunities to connect with the world’s vast information resources.

The University of Miami Library Center
The first major library building project since the Otto G. Richter Library opened in 1962, the new University of Miami Library Center will significantly expand the main campus library and serve as the intellectual hub of the University.
Main Reading Room (Ground Floor)
The Library Center’s 8,500 square-foot Main Reading Room will mirror the grand reading rooms traditionally found in academic research libraries and serve as an intellectual laboratory for independent study and research.
Special Collections Division (Second Floor)
The Special Collections Division will provide a much-needed new home to store, protect, and make accessible to the scholarly community rare and unique materials focusing on South Florida life and culture, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the papers of Florida writer’s.
Research Center (Ground Floor)
The information rich Research Center will support a hybrid reference center where subject experts connect the University Community with the information they need.
The 4,000 square-foot Grand Atrium will connect the University of Miami Library Center to the Otto G. Richter Library and function as a place for students to interact socially and intellectually.
Main Exhibition Space (Ground Floor)
The Main Exhibition Space will display materials from the Libraries’ collections and serve as a place to hold lectures, author signings, celebrations, and exhibit openings.
Rare Book and Manuscript Vault (Second Floor)
The Special Collection Division’s Rare Book and Manuscript Vault will provide an environmentally correct storage facility for the Libraries’ treasures.
Special Collections Exhibition Space (Second Floor)
Materials from the University of Miami’s Special Collections Division as well as important exhibitions from other institutions will be securely displayed in this jewel box Exhibition Space.
Special Collections Reading Room (Second Floor)
The 1,100 square-foot Reading Room with state-of-the art security will provide a quiet and comfortable space for perusing materials from the division’s collections.
Special Collections Executive Seminar Room (Second Floor)
The Executive Seminar Room will offer space for students, faculty, and archivists to engage in educational activities, work in partnership on projects, and pursue scholarly endeavors using materials from the collection.
Interactive Instruction Laboratory (Third Floor)
The Interactive Instruction Laboratory will feature state-of-the art workstations and be designed to support the experiential and collaborative learning preferences of today’s students.
Spanning three stories and linking the ground floor to the second and third floors, the Grand Staircase will overlook the Atrium and provide a focal point for the New Library Center.
Special Collections Seminar Room (Second Floor)
For smaller classes and groups, the Seminar Room will offer space for students, faculty, and archivists to use and study materials from the collection.
Student Express Email and Networking Station (Ground Floor)
The Student Express Email and Networking Station will provide a convenient place for students to drop in and quickly check their email in between classes.
Online Resource Cluster (Third Floor)
Hi-tech work stations in the Online Resource Cluster will provide a place for students to work collaboratively or independently on research projects and class assignments.
Discipline-specific Study Alcoves (Third Floor)
Three Study Alcoves will house designated subject collections and provide seating for students and scholars.
Group Study Rooms (Third Floor)
Nine Group Study Rooms will expand the Libraries offerings of places where students can engage in learning activities with their peers.
